Have you ever had issues writing or spelling certain things? Have you ever used the wrong version of a word that sounds the same? Me too! My most notorious issue is which word to use; then or than. I frequently mix these two words up and it creates an awkward moment for any reader and an embarrassing moment for myself. So what are some tips that we can use to get over this horror story of writing issues? Let us take a look.
Google
Google is a wonderful tool that you can look up the definitions of the words or see examples of it in sentences. Using this may help us differentiate between the two and help decide which word to use in our writing.
The Canadian Press Stylebook
This book has all the rules for writing that you can image. It is definitely worth purchasing if you are a frequent blogger, writer, journalist, or student such as myself. If you do any sort of official writing, this is the book for you! The tricky part is remembering to take it with you; I keep forgetting to bring mine to class.
Thesaurus
The good old-fashioned Thesaurus always works too. You can look up the two words (much like on Google) and find examples of how they are used and similar words you can replace them with if you really get stuck. Old school always works.
The difference?
So what is the difference between these two words? Well 'then' is used in relation to time and 'than' used in relation to a choice.
